Why is Downward Dog the go-to pose?

So whats so special about Down Dog and why does your teacher keep bringing you back to it? If there could be one pose that did almost everything, I would argue Downward Dog. You might first feel the hamstrings and calves when you first get into it, but your also opening the shoulders, strengthening the mid-upper back and opening the low back. Pretty much all of the posterior chain muscles (muscles that run along the back of your body) are being lengthened/strengthened, all the way down to your feet. So if your feeling tight – anywhere- pop into a Down Dog for a few breaths.
